MAGNITUDE OF INCREASE RISK OF A HEART ATTACK

30-40 years of age Fivefold increase in risk of having a heart attack above age matched population.
40-50 years of age Fourfold increase in risk of having a heart attack.
Greater than 50 years of age Threefold increase in risk of having a heart attack.

Cigarettes increase the risk of having a heart attack by 300% in persons over 50 years of age.  Though heart attacks are less frequent overall in the younger population, cigarette smoking is even a more potent risk factor for this age group.
